When she's not writing swashbuckling historical romances and playing medieval matchmaker, bestselling author Glynnis Campbell is a cartoon voice, the wife of a rock star, and the mother of two young adults. She's been a ballerina, a typographer, a film composer, a piano player, a singer in an all-girl rock band, and a voice in those violent video games you won't let your kids play. She does her best writing on cruise ships, in Scottish castles, on her husband's tour bus, and at home in her sunny southern California garden. Glynnis loves transporting readers to a place where the bold heroes have endearing flaws, the women are stronger than they look, the land is lush and untamed, and chivalry is far from dead!

Just another day in the life of a high pressure writer trying to meet a deadline.

Your real name and pen name?

I've written as Sarah McKerrigan and Kira Morgan, but Glynnis Campbell is my real name and my current author name.
Please share some of the best memories of your childhood
My brother and I used a lot of imagination when we played together, and we used to pretend we were Robin Hood's band, space explorers, orphans, time travelers, and island castaways. We did radio shows, made up songs, and put on skits for our parents, and we loved family vacations, because it gave our adventures new settings.

About your education?

I was a straight-A student in school, and I also studied ballet, piano, and voice.  I received my Bachelor of Arts with Distinction in Vocal Music from California State University at Chico.

What career did you plan during your education days?

I intended to be a singer.  I studied opera and art song during the week and sang in a rock band on weekends.

What languages you can speak and write?

Besides English, I can speak a very little bit of French, just enough to get myself into trouble.  Because I took diction for singing, I can pronounce German and Italian properly, but I don't speak them!

Glynnis or The Rogue?

What is your biggest source of inspiration in life?

My family is probably my biggest inspiration in terms of believing in me and giving me the confidence to pursue a very difficult career path.  As far as inspiring my writing, I'm influenced by just about everything, whether it's a beautiful landscape, a human interest story, a predicament I find myself in, or the characters I meet.

What hurts you most in this world?

I think I'm hurt most by unfairness.  As a child, I believed that if you worked hard and were an upstanding person, you would be rewarded with a good life.  As an adult, I see that's not so, and it bothers my sense of justice.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced? How did you overcome it?

In my career, the biggest challenge was continuing to have faith in my writing even after I received 35 rejections on my first book.  Eventually that rejected book sold to a major publisher and went on to be nominated for Best Historical Romance and Best First Book in the Romance Writers of America Rita Awards.

What is your favorite genre and why?

I like to write historical romance, but I like to read a wide variety of genres, everything from science fiction to cookbooks, from biographies to suspense, from classic literature to quirky adventures.

When did you start writing? What is the purpose of your writing?

I've been writing since I could hold a crayon! I find the written word to be an enjoyable medium in which to express myself. My purpose is to influence the way readers feel, to touch them emotionally.

Which of your work has been published so far? Would you like to share a synopsis of your work?

I've published 14 books, mostly historical romances set in medieval times, and I prefer writing about common folk, because I think they're more relatable than royals.  Because my books are traditional historical romance, there's always one man, one woman, and a happy ending.  But I like a lot of humor and adventure in my stories, so there are wild sword fights, mistaken identities, kidnappings, outlaws, and women who can kick butt!

What are your forthcoming writings?

I just released a prequel novella to my Scottish Lasses series in a book by three authors spanning several centuries. The book is "The Winter Stone," the authors are Tanya Anne Crosby, Laurin Wittig, and myself, and my story is called "The Outcast." Set in the time of Mary Queen of Scots, it follows Lachlan Mar, a disfigured and broken Scottish warrior, who doesn't believe anything can mend the wounds of war until Alisoune Hay, a brilliant and beautiful young lass, stumbles into his cottage and his life, healing his hurt and his heart with the most magical power of all—love.

What are your future plans?

Next up is writing the third Scottish Lasses book, and I'm taking a trip to Scotland for research.  After that, I want to finish the second and third books of my Old West trilogy, California Legends.  I'd like to do a third Medieval Outlaws book, as well as write a second trilogy for the Warrior Maids of Rivenloch—the Warrior Daughters of Rivenloch.  I think I'll be busy for a while!

Your dream destination on Earth?

It has been a great privilege for me, since my husband is a touring musician, to be able to travel a lot, so many of my dream destinations have come true.  I don't think I have a specific place I want to go, other than wherever's next!

Your origin of birth and other countries you have visited/ stayed. What best things you liked in these countries around the globe?

I was born and raised in California, but I've been to several states, including Alaska and Hawaii, as well as Canada, Mexico, Belize, India, Russia, the Caribbean, Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Denmark, Switzerland, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Australia, and New Zealand. I most enjoy exploring different cultures, which includes the people, the food, the history, and the land.

Your favorite time of the day?

That's a tough question, because I like all times of the day for different reasons.  But if I had to choose one, I guess I'd say just before sunset.  I like the peach-and-golden color of afternoon light and the peace that seems to descend on everything just as the sun is going down.

Your zodiac/ sunsign?

I'm a Gemini.  I feel like I'm multi-faceted, but I don't think I'm two-faced.

Your favorite color and why?

I love all shades of turquoise, aqua, and teal.  I like clothing in those colors, because they bring out my eyes.  But they're also the colors of a relaxing tropical sea.

What is the last book you finished reading? What is the current book you are reading?

My last read was "Amethyst" by Lauren Royal, because I was doing the voice-over for her audiobook!  I'm currently reading "The Stagecoach in Northern California" as research for my upcoming novel, "Native Hawk."

Your favorite book and why?

Can anyone really pick ONE favorite book? I have favorite authors, but I can't even narrow that down to one.  My favorites are Ray Bradbury, Jude Deveraux, Dean Koontz, Penelope Williamson, Stephen King, Douglas Adams, Julie Garwood, William Shakespeare, and screenwriter Joss Whedon.

Your favorite movie and why?

The movie(s) I could watch over and over again is the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. For me, it was expertly crafted storytelling with just the right amount of heart and adventure, tragedy and romance.

Your favorite celebrity and why?

I've always admired Audrey Hepburn.  Not only was she beautiful and talented, but she was sensitive and generous, and her strength and kindness shone in everything she did.

Your favorite food?

I have a fondness for homemade chocolate chip cookies.

What comes to your mind when you think of India?

Unfortunately, after I came home from New Delhi, I was sick for a month, so that's the first thing I think! However, my trip there was one of the most enlightening I've ever taken. It was a place of huge contrasts between rich and poor, modern and archaic, a melting pot of compatible religions, and a cultural experience I will never forget, because it seemed that everyone, no matter their lot, was happy.

My BFF Lauren Royal and I love to go on cheap cruises, stay on the ship, and write all day while someone else cooks, makes the bed, and does dishes.
